Buffalo Creek Streambank Stabilization Kicks Off Mid-August

The Village has contracted with ILM Environments for the Buffalo creek stabilization project on Stanton Road within the Bristol Trails Subdivision. This initiative addresses the eroded state of the creek, storm water quality, and re-establishes the overall natural environment. The project will run through the fall and residents should expect minor inconveniences from construction traffic and restricted access within the work zone.

Current State of the Creek

Over time, this segment of Buffalo Creek has experienced significant erosion, leading to the loss of critical structures (timber walls) and an increase in invasive tree species that has decreased the overall quality of the natural environment. This not only affects the aesthetic appeal of our community but also poses potential risks in localized flooding, water quality, loss of public/private property, and the safety concerns.

This project will involve the following key components:

1. Tree Removal: Invasive tree species will be removed, opening the canopy to promote a healthier and more stable native plant environment. This component is critical in the long-term success of the project. Removal of the invasive species will allow adequate sunlight exposure to the site that will support the seeding and growth of new plant life which will create a healthy natural environment.

2. Gabion Basket Retaining Walls: to prevent further erosion and loss of structure, gabion basket retaining walls will be strategically installed along the creek banks. These structures are designed to withstand the forces of water flow and provide long-term stability.

3. Flood Storage: To manage stormwater effectively during periods of heavy rainfall and flooding, storage will be incorporated into the project. This will reduce the impact of flooding on surrounding areas.

4. Native Plant Restoration: To enhance the natural habitat and promote biodiversity, native plant restoration will be a key aspect of the project. Native vegetation will be reintroduced, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem. These natives are deep rooted and will prevent erosion. A multi-year maintenance program will be included to foster the success of the native landscaping that has been added.
