How do meter reads and billing cycles correlate?
The Village changed to an Automatic Meter Reading System (AMR) in 2018 where all water meters report consumption 4 times a day to a central collection site.
On or about 21st of the month all readings are collected and transferred to the billing system and verified. Consumption is the difference between the prior month's reading and the current month's reading. Statements are calculated on our about the 25th and mailed or emailed a few days later.
For example, your 11/1/18 water billing statement would include consumption between 9/25/18 and 10/25/18. Payments are due by the 15th of the next month.
Average Water Consumption Per Day
Estimates vary, but each person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water per day. What are some typical water usages:
Bath | A good average is 36 gallons |
Shower | Shower heads use 5 gallons per minute. Water saving shower heads use 2 gallons per minute. |
Dishwasher | 6 to 16 gallons per wash cycle. Energy efficient units use 6 gallons per wash cycle. |
Clothes Washer | 25 gallons per load on newer and 40 gallons per load on older |
Outdoor Watering | About 2 gallon per minute |
Senior Citizen / Disabled Discount (SSD)
Seniors ( 65 years+ ) and individuals receiving Social Security Disability can qualify for a discount of $14.24 off their monthly bill. Complete the online application and return it with proof of age or disability to waterbilling@lakezurich.org. Additional rates apply for irrigation or sewer only service, as well as for customers outside of the village. Questions regarding water and sewer billing can be directed to the Finance Department at 847-438-5141.
Residential Summer Rates
Water consumption during the summer months traditionally increases as single-family residential customers irrigate their lawns, flower beds, vegetable gardens and fill their pools. Water used for these purposes will not be sent down the sanitary sewer and will not need to be treated by the Lake County Sewer Plant. The Village’s agreement with Lake County permits a flat-rate sewer fee (Lake County Treatment Charge) to be applied to bills from June through October that is based on 120% of the average water consumption of the non-summer months. The June through October water bills reflect the summer sewer discounted fees. This does not apply to accounts with minimum bills.
