Rock The Block - September 14, 2013 6-11 PM
Dine • Dance • Rediscover Downtown
The Village of Lake Zurich will host its first ever downtown block party, Rock The Block, on September 14, 2013 from 6 - 11 P.M. Planned as an all-ages traditional street dance, partygoers are invited to Dine, Dance and (re)discover downtown Lake Zurich. Three live bands take the stage for an evening of music, food and fun, and young party goers can visit the face painter and balloon art, sponsored by Lake Zurich Tire and Auto. The event will be held on Main Street in downtown Lake Zurich, (approximately 70 E. Main Street) and Main Street will be closed from Church Street to Old Rand beginning at 3 P.M. on the day of the event. Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton, Village Trustees and staff, local community leaders, and the public will attend.
This event is the Village of Lake Zurich’s first foray into sponsoring a large scale downtown event and planning for this event has been a community effort. The Rock The Block committee, headed by Park Manager Dave Peterson, is comprised of representatives from The Rotary Club, Lions Club, the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce, local business owners Joe Schweda (Scoreboard Bar and Grill), Bonnie Conte (Avalon Salon and Day Spa) and Lake Zurich residents. The committee has worked together over the past three months to bring together all the elements needed for a successful event.
For the night’s musical entertainment, a covered stage sponsored by Midwest Motors will be erected at Church Street and Main Street. Three bands will perform beginning at 6 P.M. when “Chicago’s #1 80’s cover band”, 80’s Enough hits the stage. Friction (approximately 9 P.M.) will take fans home with their brand of Classic Rock and current Rock offerings. Between sets, pop artist Sly Rose will entertain the crowd.
Admission to the event is free of charge. Attendees are being asked to donate three non-perishable food items to help restock the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. A donation drop off area, sponsored by Peapod, will be set up in Rotary Park, located at Old Rand and Main streets. Anyone making a food or monetary donation will receive a raffle ticket to win prizes. Twelve volunteers from the US Navy will be on hand to sort and deliver the donated items, and assist in selling bottled water, with proceeds to benefit the food pantry.
A variety of food items will be for sale from area food truck vendors, and local eateries on Main Street will also be opening their doors that evening. Beer, wine, sangria, Bob Chinn’s Mai Tais, Mike's Hard Lemonade products, water, and other non-alcoholic beverages will be sold. This year’s beer truck is collaboration between the Rotary, Lions, and LZACC and proceeds will benefit those organizations. Beer cups will be provided by Martin Enterprises. No outside alcohol is allowed, and those wishing to consume alcohol will need to have their I.D. checked and purchase a wristband for $1. Wristbands are being provided by The Ela Coalition Against Youth Substance Abuse. Beer tickets are available for purchase at $3/each or 4/$10 or 7/$20 All other alcoholic beverages $5. Individual food vendors will sell water and soda.
No outside food, beverages, or coolers will be allowed into the event.
Rock The Block is the result of an effort by Lake Zurich Mayor Tom Poynton and the Village Trustees to bring more special events to the community, and in this case, specifically to the Downtown Lake Zurich area. Proposed as a yearly event, the party is an effort to show developers that if you build in downtown Lake Zurich, the residents will come there to patronize it.
